Your Ideal Life Starts with Change

Can you remember a time in your life when you realized that something was not working for you any longer? This can come as a sudden realization or a nagging feeling of doubt that grows stronger — however you experience it, it’s your sign that what you’re doing now is no longer serving you and it’s time to make a change.

The concept of “change” typically evokes two responses. Some people will feel the need to change everything all at once before they even know what really needs changing or why. Then on the other side of the spectrum are those who get anxious around any kind of change and would prefer to ignore the problem for as long as possible.

While these are two of the most common responses, a middle ground can be the path to positive change, personal growth, and ultimately designing the life and reality of your dreams.

The first step is acknowledging and understanding that our lives are made up of fragments of moments and experiences that all come together and form a collective whole. Meaning that many small changes will undoubtedly have a large impact on your life.

For example, if you are trying to live a healthier lifestyle it is far more effective to make small changes over time as opposed to focusing on drastic changes and setting unrealistic goals.

Small changes contribute to creating a lifestyle rather than rash decisions when trying to reach a goal.

The second step is gaining insight into why something needs to change. There are times when we need a major overhaul in our lives, but the only way to know for sure is to take the time to really understand the problem.

For this exercise, start by observing every aspect of your life — your work, your relationships, your emotional/physical health, and well-being — and determine what specifically is not contributing to your best, most authentic self and lifestyle. What do you feel is holding you back?

Once you have identified the problem, then you can make actionable choices to move you in a more positive direction.

Sometimes when it comes to change we are so overwhelmed by the thought of what it will take to actually create change, that we choose to stay right where we are — even if we are unhappy. Being comfortable is a slippery slope to complacency, and when you can acknowledge that, it’s much easier to see that change does not have to be the mountain we make it out to be.

The key to making changes in our lives is to accept the necessity of change as part of life. As we change, we may find it prudent to fine-tune our relationships, work, and living situations.

Our lives are living, breathing reflections of what we accept for ourselves. If it’s not where you want it to be, then how lucky are you that you have the opportunity to change and choose again?
