Have you ever gone to a dinner party with a girlfriend, only to leave with completely different takeaways?

Maybe you found the conversation light and energizing, while she felt it was tense or awkward.

It’s fascinating how two people can be in the same room, hear the same stories, and walk away with totally different impressions.

That’s the power of perspective.

What we notice, how we interpret it, and what we choose to focus on can shape our entire experience.

Your Mind Is Always Listening

Our minds naturally look for evidence that supports what we already believe. This is known as confirmation bias, and it explains why, when we’re focused on stress, lack, or frustration, we start noticing more of the same.

If you’ve ever said, “Today is just one of those days,” you’ve probably seen how that one moment of stress can snowball into an entire day that feels off.

On the other hand, when we consciously focus on what’s going well, or what we are grateful for in the moment, our minds begin to shift toward a more positive outlook and recognize more of the good that’s already present.

It’s not about denying the hard stuff.

Life will always include challenges, disappointments, and uncertainty.

However, choosing where you want to focus your energy allows you to protect your peace and create space for what truly matters.

The Garden Analogy

Imagine your mind is a garden and every thought is a seed.

Some seeds grow weeds: self-doubt, fear, frustration.

Others grow flowers: gratitude, compassion, hope.

You get to decide which seeds you water.

When you constantly water the seeds of “I’m not good enough” or “This is never going to get better,” guess what starts to take over?

Those thoughts keep you stuck in the same cycle, leaving little room to envision something better.

However,  when you intentionally shift your attention to “I’m learning as I go” or “There is still something to be grateful for today,” you begin shaping a mindset rooted in growth and possibility.

A Shift In Perspective, Not Shutting Down Emotions

Focusing on what you do want, or what you can control, doesn’t mean pretending everything’s fine when it’s not.

Shifting perspective is about becoming aware of your thoughts and not being ruled by them.

It’s about reminding yourself that you have a choice, even when things feel uncertain.

Sometimes that choice is simply, What’s one thing I can feel proud of right now? Or, What do I want to grow more of this week: patience, trust, courage?

These small shifts in focus won’t eliminate the hard stuff, but they can create space for strength, clarity, and healing to take root.

Simple Ways to Shift Your Perspective

Notice your dominant thoughts.
What’s been running on repeat in your mind lately? Is it a narrative of worry, self-judgment, or something empowering?

Ask yourself: “What else might be true?”
This question invites expansion. Maybe instead of “I failed,” you realize, “I tried something new,” or “I showed up even when it was hard.”

Use the power of intentional focus.
Choose one word to guide your day — like peace, gratitude, or curiosity. Return to it when your mind starts to spiral.

Celebrate small wins.
Even pausing to take a deep breath, saying no when you used to say yes, or being kinder to yourself is worth acknowledging. What we celebrate, we reinforce.

You Have a Say

Life won’t always go according to plan.

There will be tough days, missed opportunities, and moments that feel messy. However, perspective reminds us that we always have a choice in how we relate to those moments.

And the more we focus on what truly matters, the more that part of our life begins to expand.

So today, ask yourself:

What’s one small shift in perspective I can practice this week?

Maybe it’s noticing what is working, offering yourself more grace, or focusing on what you can control.

Write it down, reflect on it, and see what begins to grow.
