TRANSCRIPT: How To Boost Your Self-Confidence

Hello and welcome. My name is Lori Lander founder of Lori Lander Coaching and I help women who may be feeling disconnected, unfulfilled or stuck in life create an exciting new chapter filled with passion, purposeful work, meaningful relationships, and connections with a like-minded tribe.

Today I’m going to be talking all about self-confidence and In this episode, you will learn:

  • Where self-confidence comes from
  • Why self-confidence is important
  • 5 powerful ways to boost your self-confidence

Now, I would like to begin by discussing where self-confidence comes from. There are several factors that initially play a role in your confidence level when you’re young and you have very little control over them.

The first factor that plays a role is your genes. Although researchers believe that your genetic makeup can affect your level of self-confidence, the good news is that you can change this.

The second factor that plays a role is your childhood experiences. The environment that you are raised in can have a profound effect on your confidence level. If you were raised in a home where one or both parents provided lots of encouragement and support than your self-confidence may be greater than a child who was raised by one or both parents who were not supportive, were belittling or may have been abusive in some way.

A third factor that plays a role in your confidence is the information that you receive from the world around you. If you are inundated daily with messaging that is positive this opens you up to expressing the best version of yourself. On the contrary, if the messaging around you is consistently negative or simply not realistic or relatable, then you may find yourself feeling less than and as though you don’t measure up. This can be damaging to your self-confidence.

Being confident in yourself comes down to how you perceive yourself and it sets the tone of your beliefs about yourself as you mature.

Self-confidence comes from believing and trusting in yourself and your abilities. You feel good in the skin that you’re in and you accept both your strengths and your weaknesses. You view yourself in a positive light and even when you fail, you’re able to pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and view your failure as a learning experience.

Now I want to take a moment to talk about why having self-confidence is important. To begin with, it affects how you engage with the world around you. Having a high level of self-confidence can help with communicating better with others, problem-solving, and asserting yourself more easily when necessary.

For those that lack self-confidence, they may struggle with feelings of insecurity, lack of trust and overall unhappiness in life. On the contrary, those with high self-confidence tend to feel more energized, motivated and happier overall. They also tend to have healthier relationships, more resilience and a stronger sense of self.

The good news is …. Self-confidence can be learned! You can grow your self-confidence over time with consistency and focus. I want to share with you 5 powerful ways that can help you and that you can begin doing daily. The more you practice, the stronger your self-confidence will become.

First, Surround yourself with positive influences that provide inspiration, encouragement, and support. Those who bring out your strengths and challenge you,  when necessary,  to be the best version of yourself. Some examples of positive influences could be friends, colleagues, mentors, or life coaches who have your best interests at heart. Also, reading books, listening to podcasts and inspirational quotes may help.

I myself work with a couple of accountability partners every single week to ensure that I am surrounded by people who have my best interests at heart and who also challenge me in the best ways possible and who encourage me to stay true to who I am and what I stand for.

Second, Practice positive self talk with positive affirmations. Self-talk is basically talking to yourself with positive statements or mantras either out loud or to yourself. I have another episode where I discuss positive affirmations in greater length so make sure that you login to www.lorilandercoaching.com/affirmations to view the video.

I will also provide the link in the notes section below.   A great way to do this is to take time right now and think of three positive statements about yourself. For example, you could say “I am powerful beyond measure” or “I am a loving and kind person who wants the best for myself and for all” or you could simply say “I’ve got this”.

Once you have a few positive statements memorized, repeat them to yourself in the morning when you wake up, throughout your day and at night before you go to sleep. You may also want to write little sticky notes with your affirmations on them and post them around your home and in your office, or you could type them in your cell phone or have them be the screensaver on your Laptop. The more reminders the better.

The more you say these statements to yourself with intention, the quicker they will become embedded into your belief system which then allows you to feel more self-confident.

Third, Start with the belief that you are confident.  Think about what a self-confident person looks like. Does she stand tall? Does she walk with her head held high? Does she smile regularly? Shift your mindset to believe that right here, right now you are that confident person and confident with the decisions that you make moving forward. Visualize yourself as a confident person and step into this belief. Stand, walk and smile with confidence. You will be amazed at how quickly you can shift your mentality.

Fourth, achieve small successes daily. Do one small thing every day that allows you to feel that you have accomplished something. It may be as simple as reading two pages in your book, walking outside for 5 minutes or meditating for 3 minutes. Each time you achieve one tiny goal, the feeling of success arises which in turn tends to boost your confidence level and helps encourage you to set more goals and strive to achieve them.  Practicing this on a daily basis, over time, leads to you reading an entire book, covering miles of ground on your walks, and clocking hours of meditation. The key to these larger successes is tackling one small success at a time. It is all about setting tiny attainable goals that you can achieve.

Fifth, step out of your comfort zone. You will hear me say this a lot but, you really want to get comfortable being uncomfortable. I did an entire episode called “5 Ways to Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone” that you can watch after this by going to www.LoriLanderCoaching.com/comfort-zones.  I will also provide the link in the notes section below.

I know how hard it can be to do something that feels uncomfortable and you do want to ensure that before you do whatever it is that you are about to do, that it is in direct alignment with your core values and your integrity. If you feel as though you are about to do something uncomfortable and it just does not feel right, in addition to the discomfort, then I advise that you hold off for a day or so and ask yourself if this action is allowing you to be the best version of yourself. If it is, then carry on. The more that you challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone, the more you will notice your confidence level rise.

So just a quick recap of the 5 powerful ways to boost self-confidence.

1) surround yourself with positive influence

2) practice positive self-talk with positive affirmations

3) start with the belief that you are already confident,

4) achieve small success daily and

5) step out of your comfort zone.
