Reunion Reflections: The Art of Reconnecting & Making Time for What Fills Your Soul

Recently, I had the pleasure of reuniting with ten college friends, women who have been part of my life for over 35 years. It was more than just a fun vacation—it was a soul-filling experience that reminded me how special these friendships are and how deeply important it is to nurture the connections that bring true joy and meaning to our lives.

In the busyness of day-to-day life, it’s all too easy to let meaningful relationships take a back seat. We have family, work, responsibilities, and routines that can seem endless. Sometimes, we don’t even realize we’re drifting away from the people who bring out the best in us. But reconnecting with my old friends reminded me of how essential these bonds are for our well-being. Friendships like these ground us, make us feel understood and help us remember who we are at our core.

As we shared laughter, tears, and memories, I felt a deep sense of connection and joy.  We reminisced, discussed what we’ve learned over the years, and celebrated the many twists and turns our lives have taken. For me, it wasn’t just about revisiting cherished memories, it was about reconnecting with a part of myself that felt lighter, freer, and fully present. These friendships reminded me of the person I was and the person I’ve become, and how essential it is to prioritize relationships that reflect my true self.

Spending time with these special friends allowed me to reflect on the importance of making intentional time for the people who fill our souls. Because the truth is, life will always be busy. We’ll always have reasons to put off a phone call or delay a get-together. But waiting until we have “free time” often means that time never arrives. If we want meaningful relationships in our lives, we have to make them a priority. Just like any other commitment, nurturing friendships takes time and intentional effort, and it’s worth every bit of it!

Intentional connection doesn’t mean we have to spend hours every week with each friend or feel pressure to meet unrealistic expectations. It can mean something as simple as a quick check-in text, a monthly phone call, or scheduling a coffee date, even if it’s only a few times a year. It’s the intention and effort that matter. By making space for these moments, we remind ourselves and those we care about that they are a priority, that we value them, and that they enrich our lives.

One of the biggest takeaways from our reunion was the reminder that authentic connections are life-giving. Being around people who know us deeply, who celebrate our strengths, and understand our quirks helps us feel safe, accepted, and whole. Friendships like these create a sanctuary where we can truly be ourselves, free from judgment or expectation. These are the relationships that remind us to breathe, to laugh, and to let go of whatever stresses we might be carrying. They give us perspective, reminding us that there’s more to life than just the daily grind.

So, if there’s someone you’ve been meaning to reconnect with, consider this your sign. Send that message, make that call, and carve out time to be with the people who bring you joy. The investment of time and energy is small compared to the profound impact it has on our well-being.

In prioritizing these relationships, we’re not only filling our own souls; we’re giving others the gift of connection as well. Life is too short to keep meaningful relationships on the back burner. The relationships that fill us with joy, understanding, and love deserve our attention and care. And when we make time for them, we find that life feels richer, fuller, and much more aligned with what really matters.

In a world that often pulls us in a thousand directions, let’s not forget the people who make us feel grounded, understood, and truly alive. Reconnecting with those who matter most isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. After all, the people who fill our souls are the ones who make this journey worthwhile. So, let’s make the time, reach out, and keep these soul-nourishing connections close.
