So today I want to talk with you about a disease that many women have and some who are not even aware of it…. And that is the disease to please.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why we do it.
  • One hard truth about this insidious habit.
  • One sure sign of people pleasing.
  • One step you can take to break the habit.
  • The most important thing to remember about people pleasing.

I first want to start by talking about why so many women people please.

People pleasing stems from a place of longing for others’ approval and most likely can be traced back to early childhood.  Women learn from a very young age that if you want to be liked…you better be nice. For many young girls, this translates to …putting others’ needs ahead of their own at all costs to ensure that they come across as nice, rather than putting themselves first and taking the chance that they may hurt someone else’s feelings by doing what is in their own best interests…. We were basically trained At a young age to prioritize others’ needs ahead of our own,  as a way to avoid being rejected, abandoned, or frowned upon by our peers.

One hard truth about people pleasing  is that it’s actually a form of manipulation.  This may be a tough pill to swallow..as I know it was for me when I first learned this hard truth. With people pleasers depend on the validation and acceptance of others.  And they will do just about anything for this validation and acceptance. This is a way to manage their anxiety and stress by trying to control the opinions that others may have of them and then as a result they end up satisfying others’ needs rather than their own.

A sure sign of people-pleasing is when you say yes to someone when you really mean no. When you say yes out of fear of letting the other person down, you are people pleasing. And it does not serve you or the person you are trying to please. You end up stepping out of your integrity and most likely you may become resentful for saying yes in the first place. This can then lead to a strain on your relationship with the person who you said yes to.

One step you can take to stop people pleasing is by joining the “no thank you” club.. This is by far one of the most important steps a people pleaser can take to break the habit. And it does not have to be harsh… There are plenty of ways to say no once you get the hang of it. And to help you begin to say no, I created a PDF for you to download called “10 Polite Ways To Say No Thank You.” So make sure and download the PDF below the video.

The most important thing to remember about people pleasing is that you have no control over how others choose to feel or think about you, regardless of how much or as little you try to please them. Once you come to terms with this realization it can actually be freeing.  And the good news is you do have control over how you choose to show up when you are with other people moving forward.

I hope that you found value in today’s video and I would love to hear your biggest takeaway so feel free to comment below.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead and I look forward to seeing you back here again next week.
