Hello and welcome back. My name is Lori Lander, Certified Life, and Personal Growth Coach and I work with women to help them unleash their full potential to thrive in life and in business.

So today I am going to be talking all about limiting beliefs and if you are feeling stuck in an area of your life you will not want to miss this episode!

Today i will be talking about:

  • What a limiting belief is and how they are created.
  • Common limiting beliefs
  • How to recognize your own limiting beliefs that may be holding you back
  • How to overcome these beliefs that are no longer serving you

I want to begin by asking you a question. Is there something that you have wanted to achieve for a really long time but for some reason you just can’t quite achieve it? If so, then most likely you are struggling with a limiting belief that it is blocking you or stopping you from achieving your goal.

A limiting belief is a story that you created about someone or something in your life that you believe is true but this story that you hold onto limits your growth in some way. This story or belief most likely served you in some way in the past but now it no longer serves you. And continuing to hold onto these limiting beliefs, will potentially block you in certain areas of your life until they are addressed and replaced with new and more empowering beliefs.

Now you may be wondering how these limiting beliefs are created so let me give you some insight. For many people,  these beliefs are formed in childhood and most likely they are formed as a result of someone telling you what they believe to be true and then you adopt these beliefs as facts without really questioning whether or not they are true.

I’ll give you an example that comes up a lot with clients and it is centered around money beliefs. If you grew up in a family where you constantly heard your parents say that “Money doesn’t grow on trees” you may have been raised with the belief that money is scarce and hard to come by. Hearing this as a child over and over could then cause you to believe that money is hard to come by and may cause you to have an unhealthy relationship with and around money. You may believe that it’s really hard to make money and you may find yourself struggling financially due to this belief. So you can see the power of your beliefs and how limiting beliefs can really affect how you live your life and the decisions that you make on a daily basis.

And Common limiting beliefs that I hear a lot are:

  • My happiness is outside of my control
  • I am too old to start something new
  • I am not smart enough
  • I’ve already tried everything
  • It’s selfish of me to want more
  • Nothing comes easy to me

These are just a few of so many that we tell ourselves on a daily basis without even realizing it.

So now the question becomes, how do I recognize my own limiting beliefs?

And I will answer that by saying that first, you want to look at an area of your life where you are struggling whether it be in your relationships, your career, your health, your finances or another area. Once you have determined the area that you are struggling with the most, ask yourself what your biggest struggle is around that situation. So let’s say you are struggling with your finances. You want to ask yourself what are you struggling with the most regarding your finances. Get super clear. Maybe you are struggling with credit card debt. Once you have determined what the main problem is, finish this sentence….The story I am telling myself about my financial situation is…… and allow yourself to answer. It could be the story I am telling myself is that I will never be able to pay off my credit cards.

This is a limiting belief. So in order to get clear on your limiting belief, you need to take a look at where you are struggling the most and then go from there with more probing questions. This is what I do with my clients.  I Help them get clear on their limiting beliefs and what is really holding them back and then help them replace these beliefs with new and empowering beliefs.

Once you have determined the beliefs that are holding you back it is easy to change the wording of these beliefs and replace them with new beliefs that will help propel you forward. So for example if you have always watched your parents struggle with credit card debt and now you struggle and have adopted the belief that you will never be able to pay off your credit cards, you can replace this belief with I will pay off all of my credit cards and be debt free. Affirming this new belief each and everyday will help move you forward  as you continue to stay focused on the belief that it is possible to pay off your credit cards  and be debt free rather than always thinking that you never will.

Your beliefs can be very powerful and it’s really important to get clear on identifying your own limiting beliefs, and then once you have that clarity you then are able to change these beliefs moving forward.
