Hello and welcome. My name is Lori Lander, Life and Personal Growth Coach for women and I am so glad that you are tuning in today! In the next few episodes I am going to be talking about an important topic that comes up alot in my coaching practice and also happens to be one of the main areas that holds people back from reaching their full potential to thrive in life and in business.
Today I am going to be talking about how to optimize your social environment and in my next two episodes I will be covering how to optimize your physical and your mental environments as well. Optimizing these three environments has been a game changer for me in my life and I am excited to share with you what I’ve learned over the years.
I want to begin by first talking for a moment about what I mean by optimizing your environment. In order to set yourself up for success you need to take a look at the environment in which you live in….. day in and day out ….which consists of 3 areas, your social, physical and mental environments and then determine where there may be friction. This friction in your environment is most likely holding you back from reaching your full potential without you even realizing it.
We all have some friction in our environments but it is important to minimize the friction and in some situations remove it altogether so you can reach your goals more easily. So once you peel back the layers and shed light on each of these environments, you’ll be able to see where that friction is and how to reduce or remove it completely so you can move forward, smoothly towards your goals.
Now that you have a better understanding of what optimizing your environment means and why it is so important , I want to focus on your social environment today to help you gain clarity as to whether or not there may be friction that may be holding you back.
When you look at your social environment, take an inventory of those who you surround yourself with on a daily basis. Take a moment to think about the people in your life that you spend the most time with. If it helps to write their names down go ahead and pause this video and jot their names down.
Now think about how they have impacted your life.
The relationships that you have with others will most likely either inspire you in some way or they may have the opposite effect and sadly either hold you back (consciously or unconsciously) or bring out the worst in you.
So it is important to take an inventory of your closest relationships and determine if there may be some friction there that may be potentially holding you back.
There is a quote that I love by Edmund Lee that says
“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers but most of all surround yourself with those who see greatness within you.” These are such wise and powerful words.
When you surround yourself with those people who bring out the best in you and challenge you to continually step into the best version of who you are, and also who see the greatness within you that you may not even see in yourself, you will thrive in life.
On the contrary, if you surround yourself with people who live and play small and cause you to feel less than and as though you need to dim your own light when you are around them, you may continue to play small and struggle to achieve greatness in your life.
There is another great quote by Jim Rohn that says “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”.
So think about this for a moment. Who are your 5 people right now? Are these people causing friction or helping you thrive in life?
I have a few questions that you can ask yourself if you are wondering whether you are surrounding yourself with the right people and as we go through these questions together feel free to pause this video and journal about what comes up for you as you review each person on your list.
So Take a look at your list of the top 5 people who you spend the most time with and ask yourself these questions:
Does this person bring out the best in me?
Do they inspire me to grow as a person?
Do they celebrate with me in my accomplishments and successes?
Am I able to be my true authentic self when I am with this person?
If you answered no to any of these questions then you may want to take a closer look at your relationship with this person and decide if you want to continue to maintain a close relationship with someone that could be potentially draining you.
Another way to gauge whether a relationship is healthy for you or not is to ask yourself
How you feel after you have left their presence? Do you feel Lighter or heavier? Do you feel Uplifted or drained? This can be very telling.
And These are all important questions to ask yourself.
You also want to remember quality over quantity when it comes to relationships.
it is more important to have a few quality relationships whose presence inspires you to step into the very best version of yourself rather than lots of surface relationships that have the potential to drain you.
Establishing a positive and healthy social environment is really important especially when you are wanting to grow personally and professionally. When you surround yourself with those who are also growing, you will find it so much easier to step into your greatness and achieve massive success in your life.
