Hello and welcome. My name is Lori Lander, Life and Personal Growth Coach and I work with women to help them unleash their full potential to thrive in life and in business. I am so glad that you are tuning into today !
This episode is part of a series of three episodes in a row that covers the importance of optimizing three environments in your life …your social environment which I talked about in last week’s episode, your physical environment which I will talking about today and next week I will be covering how to optimize your mental or mind environment.
In order to set yourself up for success you need to take a look at your environments which consists of 3 areas, your social, physical and mental environments and then determine where there may be friction. This friction in your environment is most likely holding you back from reaching your full potential without you even realizing it. So it’s not only important to be aware of these environments but it is also really important that your environments are fully optimized.
In today’s episode I am going to be talking about:
- What your physical environment consists of
- 4 areas that are directly impacted by your physical environment
- How one small change in my physical environment made a world of difference in my productivity and how it may help you
- Important questions to ask yourself to help you optimize your own physical environment
I want to begin by talking about what your physical environment consists of to help you gain more clarity. Your physical environment is simply the space in which you live your life and where you conduct your business. Primarily it consists of your home, your workplace and for some that are on the road a lot, your car . It is where you spend a significant amount of your time and it can directly impact your physical, emotional and social well-being along with your productivity.
So let’s take a closer look at your physical environment. Think about where you spend the majority of your day each day. Is it in your office whether it is a home office or at work? Do you spend the most time at home in your kitchen? Maybe you are constantly in your car driving? Where do you spend the bulk of your time? Now think about how this space makes you feel. Do you feel relaxed, at ease, motivated or energized in your space? Or Do you feel stressed? Anxious? Unmotivated? Or Distracted? If you are feeling a negative vibe when you think about that particular space, then it is most likely time for you to optimize this environment!
Think about what it is that may be contributing to your angst with that space. Maybe your car is cluttered with stuff which in turn may leave you with a cluttered mind. Or maybe your home office has either really bright lighting or the lighting is too dim and this may be causing stress on your vision which can lead to headaches. Or, maybe you spend a majority of time in your kitchen and you find that there are piles of papers all over your counter and this causes you to feel stressed and disorganized in your life. Think about your space and what may be the root cause of your angst. Once you have determined the root of your stress, then think of one small change you can make to optimize this area.
Many people get stressed because of lots of distractions throughout the day and find it hard to focus and get things done. If this sounds like you, you may want to get clear on what the distractions are and then make the necessary changes to either reduce the distractions or eliminate them altogether. For me personally, I used to have a lot of alerts and reminders on my computer that would go off throughout the day and I found myself constantly distracted. So I went into my settings and turned off all notifications during certain times of the day when I am working. This has made a huge impact on my productivity and was a game changer for me. This one small change has made a world of difference and is something that I recommend you do if you are struggling with this issue.
You also want to take into consideration how you want to feel in your space. Do you want to feel energized? Then maybe you need to have brighter lighting and decorate with colors that energize you. Or maybe you need for your space to help you feel more relaxed and at ease? You could get a scented candle for that space that helps calms you , or you could add more soothing and relaxed colors.
There are so many options and ways to optimize your physical environment.
So I encourage you to take some time today to look at your physical environment and see if there are ways that you can optimize it.
