Cultivating Your Resilient Spirit ~ Letting Go Of Numbing and Powerlessness
“Anyone can give up. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone would expect you to fall apart, now that is true strength.” Brene Brown
Resilience isn’t something that comes easily; it’s a trait that is cultivated and practiced. This week, we’re talking about the third Guidepost in the 10 Guideposts to Wholehearted Living, which is Cultivating Your Resilient Spirit and Letting Go Of Numbing and Powerlessness. Dr. Brene Brown tells us that having a resilient spirit requires good problem-solving skills, good emotional regulation skills, willingness to reach out for help, faith that life will go on, solid support connections, and being resourceful. Plus, a sense of humor always helps!
When we haven’t strengthened these skills, it becomes easy to want to numb the uncomfortable feelings we may have. But when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the joy, love, and pleasurable emotions. Not necessarily a great trade-off!
We all numb ourselves from time to time; you aren’t alone in this. When you notice yourself choosing behaviors that allow you to numb out, take note. This is also a good time to practice the self-compassion we talked about last week! Think about what type of comforting behaviors you could replace your numbing behaviors with, and also note the situations that trigger the behaviors.
Numbing doesn’t help us learn how to get back up when we fall down; cultivating resiliency in order to overcome adversity does that. When we’re numb, we can’t separate the good stuff from the bad stuff. And missing out on all the good to avoid a little of the bad is doing yourself a great disservice. Lean in, feel the feelings, and make sure to reach out if you think you could use a little extra support.
I know there can be some difficult emotions to sort through here, and I’m always here to help you through it! I’ve walked this path myself, and I would be honored to walk with you along your journey.
