Cultivating Laughter, Song and Dance ~ Letting Go of “Cool” and Always In Control
Are you ready?!
Today, we are diving into our 10th and final guidepost of Dr. Brene Brown’s 10 Guideposts to Wholehearted Living!
Our 10th guidepost is Cultivating Laughter, Song and, Dance, and Letting Go Of “Cool” and Always in Control. Boy, this one was a tough one for me!
Although I love having fun, I disliked giving up control. Letting go of my alter ego and allowing myself to let loose has been something that I continue to work on. As we get older, we tend to stop allowing ourselves to be silly or goofy and we begin to focus on stay cool, calm, and in control. We become so worried about how others will see us that we cover our true selves in order to show the world that we are “acceptable.”
Note to self. You do not need to present yourself as a perfectly polished statue to the world!
When you are looking to connect with a person, do you seek out someone who is perfectly poised or someone who is relatable?
We all crave authenticity, compassion, and connection, so please don’t feel the need to cover up what makes you unique!
Dr. Brown tells us that, “laughter, song, and dance create emotional and spiritual connection; they remind us of the one thing that truly matters when we are all searching for comfort, celebration, inspiration, or healing: We are not alone.”
We need to let go of the façade in order to create a true connection. Allowing ourselves to embrace who we truly are can feel vulnerable, but we can’t control what others think of us and we needn’t waste energy in doing so!
By showing your true self to the world, you allow others to do the same.
As Dr. Brown states, “When we don’t give ourselves permission to be free, we rarely tolerate that freedom in others”. There is power in vulnerability! Playing it cool might allow you to protect your feelings, but you sacrifice being true to yourself.
Please allow me to encourage you to laugh, sing, and dance to your heart’s content!
