Cultivating Calm and Stillness ~ Letting Go of Anxiety As A Lifestyle

How often have you been told to “calm down”? I think we’ve all heard this phrase at some point in our lives!

While the intention behind the phrase is well meaning, how easy is it for you to implement and to actually calm yourself in a stressful situation?

The eighth guidepost of Dr. Brene Brown’s 10 Guideposts to Wholehearted Living is Cultivating Calm and Stillness and Letting Go Of Anxiety As A Lifestyle.

This is all about taking a moment to put on the brakes in a situation where you may be feeling anxious, and allow yourself to think clearly without reacting on an emotional level. We are always going to encounter stressful situations that are beyond our control, but what we can do is control our reaction to these situations.

Dr. Brown describes calm as “creating perspective and mindfulness while managing emotional reactivity.” For some of us, the mere idea of cultivating calm and stillness can cause anxiety! But I promise that it is possible to be able to feel anxiety without letting it take over your life.

Some ways you can start creating calm and stillness in your life include implementing a meditation practice, creating phrases or mantras that you can use when you feel anxiety creeping up on you, and taking an honest self-inventory of areas in your life where you create or allow unnecessary anxiety.

Finding calm and stillness requires practice and time. Don’t be afraid to try a few things and find where you best find your calm and stillness. Just like anxiety is contagious, so is calmness! Once you discover how to harness your inner peace, you will be able to apply it in all areas of your life.

Where do you find anxiety is most present in your life? Do you have a mantra you use already? I’d love to hear it! Comment below.
