Hello! I am Lori Lander Founder of Lori Lander Coaching and I am excited to talk to you today about positive affirmations.  This simple yet powerful hack has become a daily ritual for me and is something that I strongly encourage you to consider doing beginning today.

So let’s get to it.

Today we are going to be talking about:

  • What a positive affirmation is
  • Why positive affirmations are so important.
  • The 4 step process of creating your own positive affirmations

Let’s begin by first discussing what exactly a positive affirmation is. Simply put, positive affirmations are positive statements or phrases that you use repeatedly to encourage yourself to focus on what you want your life to be like rather than what you do not want. In other words, affirmations encourage an optimistic mindset and they are a springboard for positive change. You consciously choose empowering words that will uplift you, inspire you and encourage you and help you create what you truly want in your life.

Now you may be wondering why it is important to practice positive affirmations daily.

Well, the truth is, the more you choose empowering thoughts that make you feel good, the faster it will become a habit and the better you will feel physically, emotionally and spiritually. Studies have found that affirmations can actually reprogram our subconscious mind through repetition and help us create the reality that we want.

Have you ever had a really good day and are feeling great and then something happens that completely derails you and sends you into a downward spiral that may last  the rest of the day, the week or even the month?

During times like these, positive affirmations can help you get back on track rather quickly and help you avoid engaging in self-defeating thoughts and behaviors.

One other benefit of affirmations is that they play a major role in sustaining personal change. They can serve as simple reminders as well as help you focus on your goals and keep you on track.

Now that we have covered what a positive affirmation is and why it is important, let’s discuss how you go about creating your own affirmations. The good news is, it is super simple!

First you want to think about who you are striving to be. Think about who you long to become in this process? Maybe you want to focus on confidence. Or maybe you want to focus on living a life of integrity. Your affirmations must reflect your core personal values and focus on how to reinforce and strengthen your sense of self-identity. Also, you want to use specific words and phrases  that resonate with you both personally and on a deeper level.

The second step is to ensure that your affirmations are in the present tense. So rather than saying “I want to be more confident” or “I want to live a life of integrity” you want to say “I am confident” or “I am living a life of integrity”. You are speaking “as if” you are already living this reality. As you continue to speak these words, you are becoming that person. This can be a bit challenging at first, since most likely you are not quite there yet, but this is where the magic comes into play.

Third you want to speak in first person. Begin your statements with “I” or “I am” as I discussed in the previous examples.

Fourth you want to use positive words only and refrain from a negative tone.  For example, instead of saying “I no longer want to lack confidence” you may want to say  “I am a confident woman and am secure in my own skin”.

Lastly you want to have an emotional charge in your affirmations. Connecting emotionally and using empowering words and phrases is super important.  In other words, rather than saying “I am confident” you can say “I am a  strong, confident woman and am secure in my own skin”. Notice the emotion in the second affirmation.

Ok. So we have learned how  to create our affirmations so now what do we do with them? This is where commitment comes into play. In order for positive affirmations to be effective, you must practice them daily.

First, if you have several, you may want to either write them in a journal or enter them in your phone so you remember them. Then, set a reminder on your phone so you remember to practice them daily.

Begin by saying them either to yourself or out loud every single morning before you get out of bed. If you prefer night time before bed that is also perfectly fine. And if you do them twice a day, even better. Your goal is to have this become a regular daily practice. As you become more comfortable, begin to practice several times a day. Remember the more you practice the closer you will be to turning your affirmations into your reality.

I hope you enjoyed today’s episode. I would love to hear what your affirmations are. Feel free to comment below and share.

Wishing you a fabulous day and I will see you next time.
