So today in the spirit of Thanksgiving I am going to be talking about Gratitude and my hope for you is that you will walk away from this episode feeling motivated and excited to begin practicing gratitude today.
In this episode you will learn:
- How gratitude can change your life for the better and why we all should make it a daily practice
- 5 ways to practice gratitude…and
- When the best time is to begin practicing gratitude
Ok..so I want to start by defining gratitude which is simply a human emotion where you feel a sense of appreciation or thankfulness about someone or something and when you take the time to acknowledge what you are truly grateful for, amazing things begin to happen in our brains. When I was learning more about the science behind gratitude I was fascinated with how powerful gratitude is and how much of an impact it can have on your life. Studies have found that when we express gratitude and also when we receive it from others, our brain releases the happy chemicals dopamine and serotonin that make you feel good. And the reason why it is important to practice it daily is that when you practice gratitude over time you can actually rewire your brain by strengthening your neural pathways which will help you create sustained feelings of happiness.
There are so many wonderful benefits of gratitude including alleviating stress, boosting self-esteem, enhancing feelings of empathy, improving your physical and psychological health, and helping you increase your mental strength.
I love this quote by Melody Beattie…. She says“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” and I truly believe this…and I remind myself of this all of the time…
Now I want to give you some ideas of how to begin practicing gratitude with the hope that you will feel that one of these ideas resonates with you and that you will feel inspired to go and do it daily.
- One way is to write three things that you are grateful for in a journal at either bedtime every night or first thing in the morning when you wake up.
- At least once a day tell yourself or someone that you appreciate how much they mean to you.
- Write down all of the accomplishments that you have had in your life and then read this list everyday….and don’t forget to add to it regularly…no matter how small the accomplishment may seem.
- You can create a collage of the people, places, or things that you are most grateful for and hang it somewhere where you can look at it every day.
- You can go online every day and read a positive quote. I do this every morning and I cannot tell you how much I love starting my day with a new positive quote.
These are just a few of so many ways that you can begin practicing gratitude daily in your life.
Now some of you may be wondering when the best time is to begin doing this…and I can honestly say the best time to begin is right now. Take just a moment as you are listening to this video and think of one thing right now that you are grateful for. Then go one step further and set a reminder in your phone to remind you every day at this time to think of one thing that you are grateful for. I challenge you to be doing this right now. You will be amazed at how quickly your mood can shift and how much happier you will feel.
I hope that you found value in today’s episode. Feel free to comment below and share what or who you are most grateful for.
